EPISODE 13. ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION IN ASSISTED REPRODUCTION

EPISODE 13. ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION IN ASSISTED REPRODUCTION
4 May, 2020 Centro Médico Manzanera

ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION is one of the most requested treatments in the assisted reproduction consultations when a patient asks for information for the first time.
Despite the fact that this treatment is widely “publicized” among the population, most of times it is not very clear what it really consists of, nor what its indications are. This is what I will try to explain in this new chapter.
The first point to be considerated is that we can talk about artificial insemination with partner’s sperm (IUI), or artificial insemination with donor sperm (IUI with donor sperm). In both cases, the procedure is the same, the only difference is the origin of the seminal sample.
The technique itself consists of depositing the sperm simple (after the capacitation process) in the woman’s uterus, that is, with the selection of the best sperm, as we described in the first chapter of the miniseries This is a painless process, performed with a catheter.
Son, on the one hand, we help the sperm in their “race” to reach the egg, because we “remove” the physical barriers that can prevent both gametes from meeting (hostile pH conditions, cervical mucus …). And on the other hand, we can mildly stimulate the ovaries and thus control them by ultrasound scans to perform insemination at the optimal time.
Because of all these reasons, the artificial insemination technique is the “simplest” of all assisted reproduction treatments, since fertilization takes place naturally when the egg and the sperm meet inside the woman’s body, unlike the rest of the techniques in assisted reproduction.
However, there are some requirements that must be meet in order for this technique to be reccommended: On the male’s side, it is necessary to have a acceptable seminal quality (good sperm count and motility). As for the woman, her ovaries must have good quality and certain activity.
Ask us about your case and we will advise you on the best treatment for you.
