Medication administration in an assisted reproduction treatment

Medication administration in an assisted reproduction treatment
11 November, 2020 Centro Médico Manzanera

The vast majority of drugs used for assisted reproduction treatments (artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF / ICSI) are administered subcutaneously and therefore can be done by the patient herself, her partner or a family member, very easily in her own home after one of our nurses shows you to do it step by step.

The most common place to administer subcutaneous injectables in insemination or in vitro fertilization treatments (IVF / ICSI) is usually the abdomen, due to its easy access and rapid absorption.

Basic steps for proper administration:

1. It is important to wash your hands well and prepare all the material you will need: cotton, medication, 96º alcohol.
2. Our recommendation is to administer all medication at approximately the same time.
3. Have your Manzanera Medical Center treatment guide handy and prepare the medication following the instructions that the nurses will have given you about the use of the pens or an explanation in case it is necessary to mix the drugs. You will have an emergency telephone number at all times to answer any questions that may arise.
4. Use 96º alcohol to disinfect the injection site and wait a few seconds for it to be absorbed.
5. To administer the medication, take a distance of 3-4 fingers from the navel as a reference.
6. With your index and thumb fingers, take a “pinch” of skin and insert the syringe at an inclination of approximately 90º.
7. Release the “pinch”, inject the medication and remove the needle.
8. Then press lightly with a cotton ball to avoid further bruising.

Recommendations to keep in mind:

– In case of having to mix the dose of medication once the syringe is loaded, we will have to purge, that is, we will try to eliminate the air bubbles that we have been able to introduce in the loading process.
-Try to alternate the injection point to avoid discomfort and favor the correct absorption of the drug.
-Remember that the medication guidelines are unique for each patient, depending on their treatment, diagnosis, type of ovarian response… and that these guidelines may vary as the stimulation phase progresses and the ultrasound controls are carried out.
If you have any questions or want to start a treatment with us, you can contact us by sending an email to info@centromedicomanzanera.com or through the contact forms on our website: https://www.centromedicomanzanera.com/formulario_es/ and we will study your case.
