LIFESTYLE AND REPRODUCTION (IVF-ICSI)

LIFESTYLE AND REPRODUCTION (IVF-ICSI)
11 May, 2022 Centro Médico Manzanera

Nowadays, approximately 15% of the population suffers from some kind of infertility o reproductive difficulty. The surrounding environment and our daily habits may adversely influence our general health and, therefore, can affect our reproductive capacity. We must analyse these habits altogether because they do not represent an isolated effect. Nevertheless, it is relatively simple and easy to implement in our day-to-day.

Eating habits

A deficient diet, either excessive (overweight, obesity) or insufficient (undernourishment, malnutrition) in calories, may be harmful to fertility. A varied diet with abundant fruits and vegetables, limited ingestion of processed foods and added sugars, replacing refined carbohydrates with integral grains and flour, and using natural sweeteners (fruits) can help to improve our health.

Consumption of tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and other addictive substances

The average time necessary to get pregnant is longer in women who smoke actively and passively. The consumption of addictive substances can alter menstrual cycles by shortening them and increasing the number of anovulatory cycles. Concerning the male, tobacco consumption, in the same way as alcohol and other drugs, negatively affects the main parameters of sperm: sperm count, motility and morphology).
Despite the contradicting data about the effect of caffeine on human reproduction, it is advisable to reduce the consumption of coffee or beverages with caffeine while undergoing assisted reproduction treatments. Especially for men a few days before providing the sperm sample.

Exercise

Moderate physical activity practised consistently can be beneficial to reproductive health, whereas excessive exercising can be prejudicial for fertility.

Stress

Stress and anxiety that we go through at work, the rhythm of life and uncertainty or emotional stress related to fertility treatments can influence our mood, behaviour and health. Relaxation techniques, activities and leisure are great strategies to make the process more bearable.
