VITRIFICATION OF OOCYTES IN PATIENTS WITH BREAST CANCER

VITRIFICATION OF OOCYTES IN PATIENTS WITH BREAST CANCER
16 December, 2020 Centro Médico Manzanera

Although this type of cancer is more frequent in women who have already lost their fertility, there has been an increase in the last 30 years. Among the population aged 25 to 39, from 1.5 to 2.9 cases per 1,000 inhabitants.
Due to the increase in early ages, and with cures of more than 80%, women diagnosed with cancer have not had children, but they do want to have them.
The chemotherapy used in the treatments attacks the functioning of the ovaries, preventing the production of oocytes in the future, causing early sterility. In these cases, their oocytes can be frozen, to avoid having to resort to other assisted reproduction techniques such as egg donation.
The way to get the oocytes is through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF / ICSI), but using drugs that try to reduce the production of hormones as much as possible, which, in some way, could influence tumor biology.
In regular In Vitro Fertilization (IVF / ICSI), the stimulus begins the first days of the cycle. Today, and in order not to delay cancer treatment, there are protocols to start in different parts of the cycle and this means that in 12-15 days, oocytes can be obtained for vitrification and not excessively delay cancer treatment.

CONCLUSIONS
Breast cancer today has cures above 80%, but its treatment can lead to sterility in a very high percentage.
To avoid the problem of sterility, it is important that every woman of childbearing age, and, with breast cancer, knows that her fertility can be preserved by vitrification of oocytes, so that once the treatment has passed, these oocytes can be fertilized .

The biggest problem is that cancer treatment specialists do not inform women of this approach to preserve their fertility.
