Artificial Insemination consists of inserting a catheter, which contains sperm, into the uterus. The sperm is firstly prepared in the laboratory to ensure the best sperm are selected.
Artificial Insemination can be done with the husband’s or partner’s sperm or with donor sperm.
This technique is simpler than IVF. It is usually suitable for women who do not have blocked fallopian tubes and when the man has good quality semen. The technique is also suitable for single women or homosexual couples who do not have any fertility issues.
In order to prepare for the insemination, it is necessary for the woman to undergo hormonal treatment to maximise her chances of becoming pregnant. The hormonal stimulation starts at the beginning of the menstrual cycle and lasts for approximately 8-12days. During the hormonal stimulation, the patient will need to have a number of ultrasounds to monitor the growth and number of follicles in her ovaries, which contain the oocytes. When the follicles reach the optimal size, the insemination is performed.
