How is the egg donor selected in an Assisted Reproduction Treatment?

How is the egg donor selected in an Assisted Reproduction Treatment?
20 May, 2020 Centro Médico Manzanera

This is the most frequent and important question for every patient undergoing an egg donation treatment, that is, in vitro fertilization with donor eggs.
We are explaining below in a brief an easy way, how the egg donor is selected and what the general requirements are.
In Spain, as established by law, patients undergoing an egg donation treatment are not allowed to choose the egg donor.
The donor will not be allowed to know the identity of the future parents, as well as they will not be allowed to know the identity of the donor, since egg donation is an anonymous process. The choice and responsibility of selecting the egg donor, corresponds solely and exclusively to the clinic.
All donors must go through a series of tests to confirm that they do not have any genetic or sexually transmitted diseases, as well as to assess their psychological state. These studies guarantee that they are in good health, both physically and psychologically.
Egg donors’ age should be between 18 and 35 years, time frame in which the ovarian reserve is of higher quality, which guarantees very positive results for the recipient, since using young eggs leads to higher success rates.
To qualify for the register of egg donors, in addition to being within the age range indicated above, they must met the following requirements:
1. General and gynaecological medical exams within normality
2. Proper Body Mass Index (BMI).
3. Negative results within serology (transmission diseases, etc.) and normal levels within blood tests.
4. Not suffer from any genetic alteration or other hereditary diseases, nor have a family history of hereditary diseases.
These are the general medical and legal terms, now it is time to select the most suitable donor.
The selection will be made according to two main criteria:
1. Phenotype similarity (physical characteristics) between the donor and the recipient:
 Physical complexion
 Race
 Skin color
 Eye color
 Type and hair color
2. Blood Group and Rh factor compatibility.
