RECEPTION OF EMBRYOS IN IVF/ICSI: VAGINAL PESSARIES ADMINISTRATION

RECEPTION OF EMBRYOS IN IVF/ICSI: VAGINAL PESSARIES ADMINISTRATION
29 July, 2020 Centro Médico Manzanera

The embryo recipients of assisted reproduction treatments such as egg donation, embryo adoption, ROPA and reception of vitrified embryos, must undergo endometrial preparation prior to embryo transfer. The preparation consists of a hormonal treatment that is divided into two phases, a first proliferative phase with the administration of estrogens transdermally (in the previous article we already explained how to apply and remove the patches), and a second secretory phase where administration of progesterone is added.
The most frequent route of choice in the administration of progesterone is vaginal.

Next, we will explain how to proceed with the placement of the vaginal pessaries, since on many occasions our patients have some doubts regarding the administration of this medication.

Self-administration of vaginal pessaries:

1. Try to empty your bladder.
2. Hygiene of hands and vagina. Never wash the inside of the vagina.
3. Prepare the pessary. If an applicator is available, place the pessary in it.
4. Body position. Place your legs and knees apart (shoulder width). You can also lift one foot on a bench, the edge of the toilet, or a chair, or lie on your back with your knees bent.
5. Open the lips of the vulva using one hand. With the other hand put the pessary in the vaginal opening, or place the applicator.
6. Push the pessary into the vagina. Use your index finger to insert the pessary into it. If you use an applicator, insert it and push the plunger until the pessary is inside.
7. Clean your hands again. If an applicator has been used, wash it and save it for the next application.
