SEXUAL RELATIONS AND REPRODUCTION (FIV)

SEXUAL RELATIONS AND REPRODUCTION (FIV)
3 November, 2021 Centro Médico Manzanera

Nowadays, when analyzing reproduction, we pay special attention on the one hand to sociologic aspects that are part of the process, on the other hand to the assisted reproduction, which is led by the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF/ICSI).
There are also other obstacles in reproduction, which cannot be underestimated, like insufficient sexual activity. We estimate that around a 16 % of the couples do not reach their aim to become pregnant due to diminished sexual activity.
Many factors have influence on the sexual activity, like tiredness, sorrow, or stress. In addition, some couples limit their sexual activity to the theoretically fertile days, which may increase the perception of the sex as an obligation.
The semen’s quality starts to optimize after the ejaculation increasing the movement of the spermatozoids and decreasing the spermatic DNA fragmentation (small breaks or lesions in the genetic material). However, having sexual relations every day does not benefit the reproduction, as the testicle does not have sufficient time to produce spermatozoids of an appropriate amount. We recommend being sexually active every other day, since then the semen’s quality is on the highest level. Furthermore, this waiting time of two-days abstinence is also recommended when doing In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF/ICSI).
The oocyte is receptive during 48 hours, and the spermatozoids can survive 72 hours out of the testicles, which is why the coitus every other day is recommended. Practically, they recommend that, with a periodic cycle of 23 or 24 days (starting the counting the first day of the bleeding), it would be promotive to have sex every second day between the 11th and the 17th day. Nevertheless, this rule cannot be applied with irregular cycles.
The first fraction of the ejaculation is very rich of spermatozoids, so it is very important that this first part gets into the vagina. When parts of the semen do not stay in the vagina after the coitus, it is no problem, as this part is just the semen’s plasma, where no more spermatozoids are.
As a matter of principle, to start becoming pregnant, a young couple having sex two times a week does not need to keep an eye on the calendar, nor on ovulation tests. 80 % of the couples who do not have difficulties with their fertility, they will achieve pregnancy within a year.
The pleasure eases the fertilization, because the orgasm produces contractions, which help the spermatozoid’s ascent to the uterus.
It is recommended to have a healthy live style, avoiding seating for a long time, obesity and toxic habits, which are harmful to the production of spermatozoids, because they reduce the capacity of being fertile.

CONCLUSIONS
To start with, the ideal thing would be to stop worrying about the fertile days and to start having sex two times a week.
Even though the daily ejaculation improves the semen’s fragmentation, it is not helpful concerning the recovery of the spermatozoids. For this reason, it is recommended to have sexual relations every other day.
Please, have a healthy live style and avoid toxic substances.
