EPISODE 10. TIME LAPSE IN ASSISTED REPRODUCTION TREATMENTS (IVF)

EPISODE 10. TIME LAPSE IN ASSISTED REPRODUCTION TREATMENTS (IVF)
24 April, 2020 Centro Médico Manzanera

Today we are going to deal with one of the most popular photographic techniques applied in the field of assisted reproduction (Ovodonation and IVF), the Time-Lapse (TL).
Time Lapse consists of a sequence of photographs taken with a predefined time frame between them, which are later joined to obtain a video. In this way, we will have the sensation of seeing the evolution to “fast camera” of a process that happens throughout the time.
It is a technique that is commonly used in nature to see, for example, the growth of a flower or the landscapes (sunsets or sunrises), allowing us to appreciate in a more visual, fast and evident way changes that occur in a subtle and continuous way.
For some years now, this photographic technique has been applied to the world of assisted reproduction (IVF-ICSI) in order to be able to monitor the embryos more closely and thus optimise their selection in the laboratory.
Until then, selection was based mainly on the morphology (or “appearance”) of the embryos at the time they were examined under the microscope.
The introduction of Time Lapse in the embryo culture has allowed us to add another criterion when making the selection: the kinetics; that is, to know the exact time when each of the divisions occur. Currently, embryo selection combines both criteria, morphology and kinetics (morphokinetic selection).
Another additional advantage that this technique has brought to assisted reproduction techniques (ART) is that, by having the embryos continuously “monitored”, we are able to see their complete evolution. That is, an embryo can be divided at the right time and have a good “appearance”, but if we study its complete development, we can detect anomalies that would make us rethink its quality (reverse divisions, reabsorption of fragments …)
At Centro Médico Manzanera we have a great deal of experience in the world of assisted reproduction helping our patients with their treatments. Contact us at info@centromedicomanzanera.com or through our website https://www.centromedicomanzanera.com/en/formulario_en/ and we will answer all your questions.
Have a nice day !
