GENETIC TESTS IN ASSISTED REPRODUCTION

GENETIC TESTS IN ASSISTED REPRODUCTION
30 März, 2022 Centro Médico Manzanera

Genetics is linked to different assisted reproduction treatments. Development in genetics science enables us to better select gamete (oocytes and spermatozoids) and embryo donors.
A test called genetical matching allows us to better select gamete donors and analyse up to 800 genes of donors and couples who undergo assisted reproduction treatments by simply testing their blood. This permits us to minimise the possibilities of some genetic diseases in an embryo.
Once the embryo has developed, we can perform diverse genetical analyses to study the said embryo, too.
The most widespread test is PGD (pre-implantation genetic diagnosis), which we use to study whether the embryo which is in the blastocyst stage contains chromosomic or genetic anomalies by analysing its cells. This test requires a certain invasion into the embryo when extracting the cells necessary for the analysis.
In the previous year, we witnessed a surge in non-invasive genetical diagnostics. These diagnostics permit us to obtain genetic information of the embryo by analysing the growth medium in which the embryo has developed. The information retrieved via these diagnostics is less precise than PGD but is sufficiently robust to perform a better selection of the embryo that will be transferred.
Some genetic tests show the best timeframe for the embryo implantation in the uterine endometrium (endometrial receptivity array, ERA), while other tests examine the anomalies in spermatozoids (FISH, fragmentation, Y-chromosome microdeletions).
All these tests help us, the assisted reproduction professionals, to obtain a higher rate of pregnancies with healthy babies.
If you have any doubts or wish to start treatment with us (Artificial Insemination, In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) or Egg Donation), you can contact us by sending an email to info@centromedicomanzanera.com or via the contact form on our website: https://www.centromedicomanzanera.com/en/formulario_en/.
